Dolný Smokovec has been established in 1881 by a teacher Jozef Bohus. Jozef Bohus had unsuccessfully built an student tourist house but owing to lack of money the unfinished housed bought Kerzmarska bank and rebuilded the area as a summer resort for the Hungary aristocracy. Today´s Dolny Smokovec is mainly known as a medical centre specialized in infantile paralysis.
